As I write this, I have my feet in a bucket of ice water. Fortunately, they have now gone numb.

This is the first time I've done this. Usually I just use one piece of ice on an inflammed area. Today I couldn't figure out what was bugging me in my feet, so just stuck the whole foot in ice water.

I'll let you know how the recovery goes.

Anyone else use ice baths? Do you sit right in it? I'm not sure I could face having my backside in ice...

I have learned to love ice baths. They work great for me. I usually have one after a long run. When you sit in one, the first 30 sec. are tough but it gets better soon after. Bring a magazine to keep your brain busy. Wear a hat if you want Smiley After having marinated for 10 minutes, take a warm shower. You`ll love it.

Is the hat to hide the shame of crying like a baby when your butt hits the frigid water, or are you refering to the touque required to stop the brain from freezing?

I think icebaths are great too.  But the water from our tap is cold enough for me.  My trick is to sit in the empty tub, and then start the water.  I find the gradual rise in cold water is a little easier to take.  After long runs, I need to soak my lower back as well as my quads and calves.  I don't use a hat, but I do wrap a towel around my head and shoulders.  It's amazing how much that helps to keep the rest of me warm.  Finishing with a hot shower is heaven.

I recommend filling the tub first and then sit in it. But you can try both methods and decide which technique you prefer.  The tuque keeps your brain functioning. Wearing boots and mitts could be tempting for newbie but would be problematic.

OK...I did the full ice bath deal today...yup, right up to my hips.
It wasn't as cold as it could have been, but theraputic nonetheless.
It felt wonderful after my loooooong run, and I've been on my feet all day since feeling much better than usual.

I always take a bath after any workout where my muscles feel sore. It seems to work well, but tightens your muscles. If you plan on taking an ice bath, make sure you have plenty of time to stretch, else you may find yourself feeling worse off the next day.
