Calgary Marathon and the Giver8er!

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to send a quick update about this past weekend. Rosemarie ran the Calgary Marathon on Sunday morning and I attended the Dead Goat's Giver8er, 8hr MTB race. I'll let Rosemarie update you all on how her day went, but needless to say her result was fantastic!
After the Salty Dog, I learned a lot! What I learned was I didn't fuel nearly enough. I tried to race the Salty Dog like it was an Xterra. Quick and simple! Fuel-wise the only thing I did right was drink my liquid "Jet Fuel", thanks to Eload! But what I neglected to do was eat. All I had was a couple of gels and maybe a half of a banana. This lead me to a steadily deteriorating pace and ultimately a "bonk-like" situation.
For the Giver8er, my parents and I worked out a system of always having the choice of various food to eat every lap. This meant I didn't half to plan exactly what to eat when, rather I just eat what I felt like. But the point is, I always ate something.
I held my LBP for the first 4hrs and was feeling awesome, so I started to attack the second half. I worked my way into 3rd place by the end of the 8hrs and felt like I could keep riding. This is exactly the feeling I wanted as my ultimate goal this year is 24hrs of Adrenalin Canmore.
Although this year it was cold and muddy most of the day, the event and course are a tonne of fun and definitely worth the trip out to the prairies! So mark it on your calendar's for next year and remember you can do it in teams of 2 or 4.
Looking forward to see you all soon!
Luke

AWESOME to see you steadily progressing to the 24 hr race. I hear your last lap was the fastest...that's unreal!!!
It was obvious to everyone under our eLoad tent that you were under-fuelled at Salty. I like that you talked about it with your support crew, and found a system that worked for you. I totally agree with having options when you are racing for that long, but also having an understanding that your crew needs to make sure you eat something. Way to learn and improve!!!

I agree with Ginny, the greatest aspect of that report, is how you identified a limiting factor from your last race, developed a plan to address the issue, and put it to the test during the next event. With exactly the results you were expecting to achieve. You basically showed the concept of BPR in action. It is a mindful and thoughtful approach to training and racing that we are hoping to develop in all of our athletes. That is how we can guarantee ongoing improvement for everyone, and success in some form or another at every event.
You are an excellent role model for the athletes in Calgary, and I am sure Rose is benefitting form your thoughtful and supportive approach to her running.
Be sure to rest now, and then think about how you will address other potential limiters for 24H!!!!
