As a last minute decision, I decided to do the Kal Rats sprint Tri. I thought it was important to have some BPR representation on the line.

I trained right thru this tri so the plan was just to get some more open water racing experience and dial the bike and run in for Osoyoos and IMC.

I was feeling optimistic about the swim at the start line and probably bust off the beach way too fast when the gun went off ... BTW ... What's with the quick guns in Tri's Huh No countdowns Huh? Huh

My swim time was slow but I REALLY think the course was longer than 750 m ... lots of 10 min guys went 12 mins ... hmmmmmmm  Angry
My time was 18:29 which was slower than Oliver paces. I'm still struggling with my swim and would really like to speed it up. I have put the call out to several fast swimmers to help. As I always say ... once I learn to swim fast it's going to be a whole different race  Kiss

As usual ... coming out of the water I had some time to make up and people to catch ... like 65 ... Shocked

With some encouraging words from Killer'martin ... I set off on my mission. As usual  Kiss it was non stop passing ... I was able to average 42.1 km/hr with a 28:32 time.

Staring the run I was struggling with some cramping issues ... which lasted the whole race. This definitely affected my speed and I ran a 22:03 split which is slow for me.

Overall I did 1:11:43 ... I can go way faster and will make amends in Osoyoos.

As for race specific issues ... my respiration in the water was thru the roof as I definitely went out too hard. The bike was pretty controlled with both HR and respiration and the run was controlled as my cramping slowed me down enough to the point I was below BP.

In the end I was 15th overall and second in my age group.  Undecided

Tx for reading ...

Hey Simon
Great to see you looking FINE in your BPR kit today. Thanks for representing!!

Yup, your swim was dog slow...I can't say I can coach you much in the swim, but let's get out in the water as much as we can. I have a feeling you are swimming twice the distance without a black line to follow.

42.2km is unreal!! Great riding as usual. You likely shocked a few people screaming by at that pace.

We had a little chat about the diaphragm cramping. I've had that many times. We talked a little about recovery from that once it hits. I usually have to walk long enough to calm the breathing down with deep exhalation, then pausing and allowing the natural reflex for inhalation. If I try and keep running, it often takes much longer to get over it. That's a pretty great run time given the circumstances.

You are learning more every time you put yourself on the start line. Two months until the 'big show' in Penticton. Your strengths will shine over the longer distance.
