Olav put on a great event for the Masters this week-end, and had a pretty good turn out from the Island and Vancouver crews.
We had 4 BPR athletes in attendance, 3 of us riding in the 40+ age group (Tom, Sean McEvoy and myself), while Jason raced with the young guns, giving us a 3 minute head start. 4 x 14km laps on a really hilly course, would have been perfect for our MTB riders who love to hammer the hills, and perfect for Tom who is just a few weeks back from Transalps.
We raced well as a team, and had all three of us in the final group of 5 that broke away on the 3rd time up St. Anne's. I was dropped first, but made the jump to catch a hold of Sean's wheel halfway up, and he did a spectacular job to stay focused and help me catch the lead trio before they got away on the flats. We were both shed again on the final ascent, and rode across the line together, after reeling in most of the 50 year old and some of the 60/70s group, that started over 10 minutes ahead of us.
Jason was as strong as always and went on a solo break on lap 3, and nearly caught Sean and I as we pedalled home, for a very impressive victory over his comrades in the 30s division.
A VERY successful week-end of racing for us. Sean learned that he can push much further than he thought, and showed his strength today. I was happy with my results, as I build up to Wisconsin, and do some mental prep for this week's Crit. Which reminds me...see you ALL there!!! Tom and Joel, plus Peter O and Peter W have all said they intend to be there, so it could be a HUGE night for BPR. Get there early for warm up, and join in the pre-race discussion with Tom, who will help us set team tactics this week!
