I just came back from a fantastic run at Ellison Park in my Vibram barefoot shoes. If you've been to Ellison you know there is a web of trails. If you know me at all, you know I'm navigationally challenged. I was so pleased with myself on the way out. I was really observant of markings, and made some for myself with crossed branches, a piece of flagging tape I found, counting the trail exits. I got some great flow on the undulating soft trails, with my own mental soundtrack going on. OK, so I got a little distracted. On the way back it became pretty comical. "Yeah, that's right, turn at the stump...downhill, no maybe one more trail uphill. Oh there is my marking. I'm so smart. Wait a sec...was I supposed to go left or right at my marking." I then turned into Man-Tracker, and went down a few trails looking for soft ground. No one else has barefoot shoes, so my markings would be pretty obvious. Let's just say, my heart rate came down to resting a few times while I sorted things out. Made it out though!! Also this time I didn't leave the lights on in the car, so I didn't even have to hitch hike home!

In case I don't say it in public enough...
I love you. For telling great stories. For enjoying getting lost in the trails. For running barefoot. For making me smile.

Beautiful swim this morning. It was really calm, and a loon was waiting for me half way to make my day!
I swam at 1:05 turn-over with my Finis pace beeper. That is now really consistent for 1hr10min. I'm going to try 1:03 next time, and see if I can sustain it for such a long swim.
The cycling is rock solid, having ridden 90km, 100km 155km twice, and 190km all in two weeks.
The running is really disappointing. My heel pain is totally cleared up, and now I'm dealing with weak calves and very inflamed achilles. I've had a few really fun runs in the trails, but short stride and pitter patter. Tomorrow I'll do an uber long water run and try and get the hip flexors ready for the that marathon. I had no intention of racing again injured....6/8 Ironman attempts under-trained...OK...I'll love the event, but it's not what I was planning or hoping for. I'll do everything I can to get strong for race day, but it's not ideal.
Everyone has their 'thing' that will challenge them on race day. I'm pretty sure I know what mine is, but as you all know, ANYTHING can happen. It's possible the achilles will be mild in comparison to some other challenge that comes my way. Can't wait for the adventure of it all!

So I did the 2hr30 water run today. Thankfully Ally joined me for the final hour. It's an odd feeling. Nothing gets sore like running, but I can feel the hamstrings and hip flexors tired. I'm tired, but not like after a real run. It takes real focus to keep the cadence up, and keep working hard....so weird. Can't wait to get in a trail run this weekend.

you rock ginny!! I think 2.5hrs of water running out does our trail run/hike/getting lost/running out of water/7.5 hour rampage last sunday!! Conquered Little White though - what a wicked view!!
Keep up the running this week - can't wait to cheer you on in 2 weeks!!
Chris

7.5hr Little White Ascent?!! That's awesome. Oh dear...you are clearly on the path to ultra-marathoning...we may need an intervention.
I was up there in 2002. It was a week after my very first IM. Andrew bought me a dual suspension mtn bike, and we joined a group of docs who do it every Sept. The understanding was that I could turn back at any time, and I could go easy peasy. Well there is no easy peasy up Little White. On the descent, I was so tired, I screamed down everything. The next time I was there, I walked ALOT of the descent, wondering how the heck I rode it the year before...

OOOHHH!!! I can see an official BPR Event planned for late September...Little White or Bust! Do it on your feet, or on your bike, but make it to the top for a team photo! How does September 18th or 19th work for people?

Brilliant Idea! How ride-able was the route Chris? Did you go up the logging road or the Telegraph trail? It's a killer downhill from the top, down the telegraph trail, and then down the Crawford Trail (I haven't actually done it in about 15 years, so I have no idea if it's cleared or not?!?). From 7,200 feet to 1100 feet! Oh ya, I guess that means you have to go up too:)
