Come on...you all know it. You buy that stereo, then get home, look at the bill and say "what was I thinking?!".
I just broke all of my rules....
1) do not sign up for a race within 6 weeks of racing an IM. Your brain does not evaluate the world well yet...
2) do not sign up for an IM without a family discussion first
3) do your research. what are actually buying. yeah, I don't have a clue about transportation, accomodation, and price tag attached
4) do not sign up for a race until you prove to yourself that you'll be healthy aka get over the decade long injury FIRST.
So here it is 2am, and I'm posting on the Forum like an alcoholic with 'morning-after' guilt.
Here was my reasoning...Andrew just qualified for Kona 2011, and I'd like to race with him. All the IM races are full but one. I could do IMCDA as a fundraiser spot, but more expensive and 5 weeks later in the sched. Texas is the same scenario, and a bad weekend for me. Get the race done early to recover and train for Kona. Have a warm desert holiday with the family in May.
The first race report on St. George IM was fantastic. Glowing report in fact. The next three, subsequent to signing up, were less than glowing, and somewhat petrifying. They included the following notes: - water start. freeeeezing water. no feeling in hands or feet for 2 hrs. - chip seal road....for 180km - change your cog set for 15-17% grade on switch backs...the ones you do on BOTH laps - as beautiful as IMC, but TWICE the climbing - "the talk pre-race will be the ride. the talk post-race will be the run" - 3000ft of climbing on the run!! - usually mid 80 degrees by the afternoon
OK...the pros - early May so I'll be 'fresh' - stunning scenery - pools for Maddy to play in, assuming they want to come - it'll force me to become a good runner this winter - a little fear will get me to the pool
There has been a whisper that another BPR IM athlete may consider it. Selfishly, I'd love the company....but follow my rules of course....don't even consider it for 6 weeks after IMC!!!

I dont know if i would call it buyers remorse....Its an IM you have never done before, so its a brand new challenge. You can fly into Vegas, rent a car, drive 90min north and your are in Saint George utah . Dont worry, you wont be alone, I will be there suffering right along side....

All that climbing means "No Chocolate Brownies!!" I think the remorse will turn to excitement as some point.

Thanks guys! Eric...forgot you are doing it. It will be GREAT to have you there.
Quail, I'll be joining the BPR crew on those early season rides around the lake. Eric you gotta join us.
Just spoke to Andrew...he thinks we should go down for a week, and take mtn bikes, and get any of the BPR crew down to mtn for a week in Red Rock country. We could rent a van in Vegas and get the whole crew to St. George. Rent a house. Any takers?

Lets make it official...BPR MTB Training Camp in Zion Park. Truly epic single track, and MILES of trails. Then a day of cheering like nuts before we head for home. We will start looking into accommodation, and I will talk with some friends who have ridden in the area, who have all raved about the trails.
Zion is consistently in the top 10 destinations to travel for riding in the US. Gin's spur of the moment decision has just given us a great reason to finally commit to going. I will plan for our family to be there for 10 days, including 7 days ahead of the race, and a few days after before we travel back. People are welcome to join us for as much of that time as they wish. This will be a self-catered camp, but we will plan on doing some group planning for the gang that decides to join us.
Mark it on your calendars...should be a greta prep week for Salty Dog!!!

Bart and I will be around the area then. We'd planned a trip to hit Moab, Grand Canyon, Zion, etc. for that time frame. So we'd be up to join for a few days if we are welcome. Then we'd likely stay to cheer Ginny on.

Courtney and Bart!!! It would be so cool to have you down there. I'm thinking we'll rent a house if there is a gang that wants to ride all week.

If anybody is interested in some shared accomodation options for St George for early May, 2011 please message me. Whether you are doing the St George IM or just riding the MTB trails as Andrew suggests, if we pool resources we should be able to come up with some cost effective accomodations. There are a few options ... Lets talk ... Simon
