What is Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST)?

Look for more information in Runners World Magazine (May 2011, p. 52-53) and Impact Magazine (July/August 2011p. 58-59)

Facts on Fascia:

-Fascia is a soft fibrous tissue that surrounds and connects muscles, bones, joints, nerves, organs, blood and lymph vessels
-it is a continuous web-like sheath surrounded with an interactive gel type substance, together filling the void between all other structures
-when healthy, it moves fluidly, is loose and reactive to tension and pressure
-is a communicative and dynamic tissue
-continuously adapts its shape to allow free movement of the body
-can develop adhesions, therefore movement restriction, in response to aging, injury, stresses, etc.
-when unhealthy, causes early muscle fatigue, feelings of stiffness and leads to motor and postural compensations

What does Fascial Stretch Therapy do?

-re-organizes the fascia through pain-free assisted stretching on a table
-incorporates passive range of motion to relax the neuromuscular system
-uses modified PNF techniques (contract-release) that enhance the relaxation of the muscle and its stretching capacity
-involves gentle traction to increase joint space and overall flexibility
-is pain-free and results in immediate, long-lasting improvements in mobility, function and performance

Benefits of Fascial Stretch Therapy:

-improves tissue elasticity
-improves posture and functional capacity
-helps chronic pain symptoms disappear
-reduces risk of injuries
-enhances physical performance (strength, power, speed, coordination, endurance and flexibility)
-improves ability to recover from intense training and competition
-promotes well-being

For those who have not yet had treatment provided by Majo, I can attest to the value and quality of the work she provides. I am hoping to have some time with her this week to help with recovery from my race in Canmore, and to help prepare for Nationals in Whistler in a few weeks. Majo's offer to support the BPR crew racing at Ironman is both kind and timely, and I encourage all our readers on the forum to contact her should you need some assistance with your current rehab program.

Thank you Andrew!  Hey, for the ones going to the Penticton Crit tomorrow, check out Danielle, Kate and Judy, my FST partners at the upcoming iron week :-)  I am not sure if they will offer some samples but if so you should give FST a try!

Have fun tomorrow!

You wish to improve your PERFORMANCE!?  And still wonder about FASCIAL STRETCH THERAPY (FST)!?  Here is a nicely written article from Alfred Ball, a colleague in Vancouver.  Please check it out:
