This was the last year of the National Championships in Kelowna and a qualifier for the World Triathlon Championships in New Zealand next year.
The swim start was pretty smooth with hardly any fisticuffs.  I got a good quick start and was able to find a good set of feet.  My stroke felt nice and smooth and I ended up with a 21:28 swim.
The bike course is pretty fun with a number of corners to make it more interesting than a straight up triathlon course.  I haven’t spent any time in aero position this year and not that much time on the road bike lately compared to the mountain bike.  By the time the bike was over, my hamstrings were very sore.  My time was 3 minutes slower this year compared to last year and I ended up with a time of 1:06:01.
The run is a 2 lap, nice fast course along the lakefront.  I tried to keep a high cadence and then stride out in the last couple kms.  The run went pretty well and I ended up with a time of 39:39, just getting under the 40 minute barrier.
My final time was 2:09:56, about 5 seconds faster than last year.  This was good enough for 24th overall and 5th in my category.  Hopefully off to New Zealand next year!

Wahoooooo! You have been a racing machine lately!
We checked out your results, and that run is pretty quick when you look at the leaders run splits. Your bike was pretty darn good when you think you haven't been in aero. It's a different way of riding for sure. Congratulations.

It is impressive that you made up the lack of bike speed by a really quick swim and run!!!
Certainly the work you did with Chris paid off. Aero practice will be on the agenda in prep for New Zealand!!!!

Any limitations that you were able to identify?

Either way it is time to rest up for Whistler...another shot at National glory!!!

Super proud of the way all of the Kelowna Crew raced - Ian, Emma, Jeff, Mark, Dee and Greg all had great days out there.

My day was up and down - swim felt good but I lost the lead groups feet at 500m - we had gapped the rest of the field so I ended up in no-mans land for 1000m. Came out in 24mins which is solid for me! Good T1 and felt fine heading up knox the first time - the whole bike was a pass-fest and seeing Ian out front kept me motivated to keep pushing. Biked 1.07 - super happy about that. T2 went OK - I could feel some cramping coming on in the calves and hammies, but got the shoes on and out I went. The run was brutal - feet felt slow, I blistered early and I let the pain get inside my head. Disappointing but had un-realistic expectations with the volume of running/training I have had in the last 6 months.

Limitations
1) Cadence on the run - my lack of running has deteriorated this skill that I worked so hard on improving last year - damn!!
2) Nutrition - I did not take enough water on the bike - I think I could have kept the cramping at bay with more H20
3) Head space/planning - I chose a stupid option for footwear - the pain from the blisters had me in self-doubt from about 3km in, not a great place to be in when you want to push!!!

Great day all round - and wicked to see Simon Whitfield kick some butt in the elite race!!!

I kept seeing Chris on the turnaround and I wasn't really making any time on him.  I fully expected to see him on the run.

As for limitations, my lack of time in aero position definitely made itself felt in the form of very sore hamstrings and a slower time than last year.  Also, on the second lap of the run, I could feel myself struggling to maintain form.  I didn't notice my respiration rate getting out of control and my HR seemed fairly normal for a race.

More time on the aero bars, hamstring flexibility and keep working on forefoot running along with some core strength training to prevent folding like a cheap lawn chair in the last couple km of the run.
