My first road running race was a big learning experince , not knowing the pacing , or just simply how to run on a flat , paved road was all new to me. My warm up went great some high octain coffee & some sprints . I hit the start hard & was feeling great I was in top 7 at 5 k . My watch saying I was about 10 beats above bp & rpm avg was 101 and 17.30 minutes into it. Then it happened some old guy ( kindly) told me this pace will be a 36 min pace. I thought to myself who cares about time it's what I place i finish & this old dude not going to beat  me , so I hit the turbo and put my heart rate to max overdrive  & rpm was bump up to 110 and I drop him , I was feeling good till I hit about the 7 k & the old man ran by & some other dudes , I was falling apart and never I've realized  , I lost lots of spots in the last 3 km. Finished 15 th ..... Next weekend is peak to peak and I'm going to crush that old dude & 7 other dudes that are on my" kick there ass list"With my NEW race plan....

Hey Warren - WOW - you really are turning into a runner!!
Sounds like you had a good start, with great cadence through the whole event! Did you take any notice of your breathing during the last 5km?? I wonder if you had lost your control and this paved the way to the wheels slowly coming off?Huh Interested to hear your thoughts.

Look forward to you crushing these guys in K town for the PtoB.

Talk to you soon

My breathing was fast for the first 5 k then it did slow down & my rpm followed untill I noticed then the last 10 k I was breathing as fast as I could ever 2 steps (110 rpm) and I think I felt better it was just to late .

Warren, I am always impressed with your honesty and no-hold-barred approach to racing. Sounds like you were actually on pace for a 35 minute pace, which is crazy fast, and probably added to the length of that pain train you were on in the closing 3 km.

Next week, eye up the competition, but hold back on the attack until the back half. Be careful not to unleash the 110 cadence until you know you can hold that to the finish. That type of cadence requires an incredible respiratory coordination that may not be sustainable for much more than a few minutes.

Keep up the passionate racing and great reports!

My biggest mistake in the race is my pace , it was all over anytime I look at my watch I was any were from 14-18 kmh & the race was dead flat . On a bike it's super easy to find rest during a race BUT running a different game , after I hit the afterburner I fell apart like a Lego starship hitting pavement. So this next race I'm hopping to set up my watch with a pace buddy to lead the way for me...
