Peak to peak should be re-named peak to blow up . The race plan today start like a turtule & finish like a tiger  but ended up more like KABOOM . I decied to go natural today ( no watch or GPS ) i tryed at first to keep rpm & breathing slow and everyhing seemed great untill 14 km marker (7 km farther to last weeks grenade) where my hamestring tighten right up bad . All week since last week race they have been in pain , close my eyes and cry just to put on my underwear ! So to combat this at the 14 k marker I shorten my all ready short strides and incresed the rpm but my speed drop huge & turned into a craw & I lost up to 10 places in the closing 4 km. And once again I'm  made to add more names to the LIST & what's even more un cool is I have to add a Chica to the LIST !
so what happened here was not a full on Grenade , breathing , heart rate, rpm, all seemed good just plan old not enough speed training or racing in the legs.

It really is good to see you out racing on the road Warren - the skills you are learning will pay dividends in the long run (hehehehe - excuse the pun)

I am going to go out on a limb here - I think you went way to hard at the start. The first 3km is all DOWN HILL - with your fast cadence you may have been able to keep up with the front of the pack, you just might not have the same strength as then to cope with the eccentric loading that the start requires. With your tight hamstrings already, this would really shred the legs. It is great that you managed to run a good 14km, would have been interesting to see your splits to see if your pace was good all the way up to there?

What did you do for a warm up??

Keep it up mate, good things will come of this end of the season for sure

Hey Warren
I always look forward to your posts. You have me chuckling every time!
Well Peak to Beak is always painful, even on a perfect day, and walking the next day after that insane descent is always a challenge.
I think that particular race, if you really cared about performance there, needs really specific training. Downhill running. Fast and furious.
It's a total shock when you get to the flats and realize that your legs are fried and you are only 1/3 of the way there.
Since you don't really have anything to loose, what about try the next race with a plan completely based on breathing, realizing that you'll have to start with the Grannies. Try breathing 4 and 4 for the first 3 km, then gradually shifting gears until you are at full throttle for the final 3km. But then again, your posts would be downright boring....

FYI .....compression socks are for pregnant women. A male can only wear them under a snowsuit & with no one knowing, even then there is still risk.
