Background
Affectionately known as “Racey Stacey”, Stacey Shand was based in Regina, Saskatchewan, but is now a Kelowna based ultra-marathoner, ultra-triathlete and extreme racer. Among the usual marathons, Ironman triathlons and ultra-marathons on her calendar, this past July, Stacey took on what is recognized globally as the toughest footrace on the planet: the 217 km (135 mile) “Badwater 135 Ultra Marathon” in Death Valley, California. Then a few weeks later she goes and takes second place in the women’s division of the 2013 Ultraman Canada Triathlon race – a 3-day event which includes a 10 km swim, bike 420.2 km and run 84.3 km. Stacey entered the sports of running and triathlon 7 years ago as part of a physical rehabilitation ‘promise’ made to herself after a car accident. As she tried common race distances out for her first time, Stacey found herself more interested in how much further she could take her body versus how much faster it could go. This curiosity has led her on a route of the ‘extreme’. Recently given the title “ultra-extreme marathon runner” (Calgary Herald), her other recent accomplishments include completing the TransAlpine Ultra through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, placing 2nd female in the multi-day 227km volcano running event “Route of Fire” in Costa Rica, 1st place female finish in the Rock & Ice Ultra in the Canadian Arctic, and completing back to back summits of Africa’s two highest mountains, Mt Kilimanjaro (Umbwe Route) followed by Mt Kenya (Sirimon/Chogoria Route) within the span of one week. |
